Also known as the Maned Wolf.
Direct translation from Latin - golden dog with short tail.
Despite the name, it is neither a true wolf nor a fox. The maned wolf is the only species in the genus Chrysocyon, and its closest living relatives are South American canids.
Native to the grasslands and scrub forests of central South America, it is built for height rather than bulk. Long, stilt-like legs lift it above tall grasses, allowing it to see and move through its environment with quiet efficiency.
Its rust-colored coat, black lower legs, and distinctive dark mane give it an unmistakable silhouette. When alarmed or alert, the mane stands upright, exaggerating its size.
Unlike wolves, it is largely solitary. Unlike foxes, it moves with a measured, almost deliberate stride.
