# Chrysocyon brachyurus

![Close-up of a maned wolf with reddish-brown fur, large ears, and dark facial markings looking to the left.](https://cdn2.pelica.net/posts/chrysocyonbrachyurus/IMG-0401-69a5d32331c69.jpg)

Also known as the [Maned Wolf](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maned_wolf).

Direct translation from Latin - *golden dog with short tail*.

Despite the name, it is neither a true wolf nor a fox. The maned wolf is the only species in the genus *Chrysocyon*, and its closest living relatives are South American canids.

Native to the grasslands and scrub forests of central South America, it is built for height rather than bulk. Long, stilt-like legs lift it above tall grasses, allowing it to see and move through its environment with quiet efficiency.

Its rust-colored coat, black lower legs, and distinctive dark mane give it an unmistakable silhouette. When alarmed or alert, the mane stands upright, exaggerating its size.

Unlike wolves, it is largely solitary.
Unlike foxes, it moves with a measured, almost deliberate stride.

Which is exactly the kind of creature you drive an hour to go and stand near with a camera.

## Hamerton Zoo - 4th of March 2026

Okay, so this was the first time I heard them bark in real life. That was... unexpected. Listen below!

The trick, I've learned, is patience and low profile. Dark clothes. Slow movements. Kneeling on damp grass and hoping they don't notice you. They're just deeply, genuinely anxious about the whole situation. Every human is a threat assessment. Every sudden movement resets the clock.

And yet somehow, when one of them finally stops, turns, and just... looks at you - it's worth every sore knee. And when you catch them just being themselves, running around like the world owes them nothing - well. That's what you showed up for.

So yeah. Not a wolf. Not a fox. Entirely its own problem. And yet somehow, mine too.
